in a nutshell

Thirteen Group is one of the UK’s largest social housing landlords based in the North East.

As a newly formed organisation following a merger in 2014, Thirteen’s Leadership Team engaged scarlettabbott to work with them to deliver an ambitious staff engagement project to explore how they could move from being a ‘good to great’ business.

We took the revolutionary step of inviting colleagues from all levels of the business to share their unique perspectives on how the business is run and what improvements could be made. In effect, employees were asked to actively participate in defining the strategic direction of the organisation.


the challenge

The challenge for this process was ensuring that following our discussion workshops, we were left with data that was meaningful as well as actionable. Thirteen Group is made up of a wide range of functions from procurement to plumbers, and so finding an engaging solution that offered tangible results was a major factor in developing our response.

the response & delivery

We asked more than 160 colleagues just twelve questions, but received more than 1,500 responses. Despite the sheer volume of data collected, there were just a handful of reasons given to the question ‘What do you love most about your job.’ The design of our sessions allowed employees to share their incredible working knowledge of the social housing sector and Thirteen Group as a business with the senior leadership team.

We compiled a full report for senior leaders and an executive summary to everyone who took part (making it available internally too) to show our results and provide insight into our findings.
