Understanding partners’ communication needs at a top law firm

Law firm Shoosmiths has enjoyed significant growth over recent years, meaning more partners spread across a broader geography. We ran focus groups with more than 50 of them, plus a session with the firm’s Board, to understand what’s working and what could be improved when it comes to communicating with the partner community.

Shoosmiths had enjoyed significant growth over several years, meaning more partners spread across a broader geography. However, ways of communicating with the partner group hadn’t really changed; leaders were trying to engage with nearly 200 people in the same way they had with 20.

the response & delivery

We ran a qualitative comms audit to find out what partners thought of existing communication practices in Shoosmiths. Using the insights gathered, we created a detailed report that presented the firm’s senior leaders with six overarching themes, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of partner communications. We also offered 10 recommendations to help Shoosmiths make meaningful improvements.

After doing detailed research around Shoosmiths’ existing practices, we facilitated focus groups with almost a third of the partner population and ran a leadership session with the firm’s Board. The focus groups dug into the detail of how existing channels were working, how well equipped partners were for collaboration and what could help them be more effective.
