Meet Patrick Halkett, our Senior IC Writer and Editor and resident Monocle-reader
What doesn’t Patrick bring to the table? If you’re after candid commentary, writing expertise, or worryingly accurate Father Ted references, Patrick has it covered. Read all about our lovely young man below.
What’s the earliest thing you can remember?
Tearing the living room wallpaper off the wall. I vaguely remember thinking ‘It’s about time we find out where these people stand on mindless acts of vandalism’. I soon found out where my mum stood on the matter – it was an ill-judged decision.
What’s your favourite flavour ice cream?
Where is your favourite place in the world?
The west coast of Ireland – I love the fresh air, rugged landscapes, racecourses and availability of excellent Guinness.
What’s a great book you’ve read?
Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh is comfortably the best book I’ve ever read. It’s also got an excellent TV adaptation, too.
When you’re having a bad day, what do you do to make yourself feel better?
I should probably say something like ‘go for a run’ shouldn’t I? In reality, I tend to eat some kind of pie. Sorry (not sorry).
What’s your favourite season and why?
As a lover of National Hunt horse racing it has to be autumn time, when the excitement of a new season begins to kick in.
If you could pick a new first name, what would it be?
Something Italian, like Gianluca.
What’s your favourite quote from a movie?
“We want the finest wines available to humanity. And we want them here, and we want them now!”
Withnail & I
What fictional character would you like to meet?
Chris Finch – “One the cleverest blokes I know, definitely the cleverest you know.”
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?
My brother once told me: “Don’t drink champagne at the wedding, if you’re not willing to go to the funeral.” You’ve got to be there for people when times are tough, not just when the going’s good.
