Do emojis have a place in internal communications?

As employee engagement experts, we observe trends in all types of communication – particularly words and pictures, and how they work together. In our mobile age, the two have combined to give us emojis, and we’re intrigued by their overwhelming popularity!

Why, when we have 26 letters at our disposal (not to mention the numbers and a variety of grammatical symbols) do we use emojis? What do they say that words can’t?

It all started on our keyboards. As soon as we could make : ) and : ( we realised we could convey extra emotion – and let’s not ignore the cheeky, sarcastic, you-know-what-we’re-talking-about ; ) either!

Emojis are playful additions to words. They communicate extra emotion. Ever written a message, read it back and wondered whether it’s too formal or stuffy? Now we have emojis, we just need to stick a smiley face on the end and the job’s a good ‘un! : )

Playful additions in any language

Emojis have crept into our language and culture. We get them in emails all the time and, not ones to be rude, we send them back too : ) We’ve even been known to put them in pitch documents, once!

Someone has actually gone to the trouble of translating Herman Melville’s book, Moby Dick, using just emoji. They’ve called it Emoji Dick. Honestly – it’s true! :-O

And now Oxford Dictionaries is redefining the boundaries of language by announcing the ‘Face with Tears of Joy’ emoji as their Word of the Year. What next?!

While there’s a time and a place for emojis, their growth in popularity is undeniable. They’ll carry on edging their way into our culture, probably never replacing language but embellishing upon it.

Which begs the question: will we be seeing emoji in print? Will we see them in business, or internal communications? Would it ever be appropriate, or necessary?

Above all, will they, or can they, help us communicate better with our people?

Emojis or not, if you want to connect with your audience, give us a call – or email us with a few emojis! : )
